# Languages and locales

How Newtone models source and target languages, and regional variants

Newtone separates two things that are often treated as one. Keeping them apart is what allows the same brand to sound right in Quebec and in France without maintaining two sets of everything.

**Language** — the language content is written in. French.

**Locale** — a language plus a regional variant. `fr-FR` and `fr-CA` are the same language and different locales, with different vocabulary, conventions and sometimes different legal wording.

Using the right locale makes a significant difference in search performance (SEO, GEO), as search terminology is often quite different, e.g. a `jumper` in `en-GB` is a `sweater` in `en-US.`

## Supported locales

Currently, Newtone supports 50+ locales covering most major global markets. The current list of supported locales is available here: [Open languages in Newtone](https://app2.newtone.ai/configure/catalog)

If you target locale is not in the list, please [contact us](/contact-us/contact.md). There is a good change that our models support it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.newtone.ai/documentation/core-concepts/languages-and-locales.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
